Welcome to our Bunny Barn!
On New Year's Eve, 2015, my husband and I broke ground for a new home for my Holland lop rabbits. Hook's Hollands began in my garage, which was too dark and cramped to give my bunnies the quality of life that I felt they deserved, and so plans for a "little barn" for my bunnies were created. With my husband's skills as a construction engineer, materials scavenged from various auctions, and many long, cold hours of work, the bunny barn was finished late spring of 2016...and the result was more a bunny house than a barn (but the alliteration is much better as bunny barn). My favorite parts are the fish scale gables and sage green siding as well as the covered porch and all of the windows (none of them match and have minor blemishes, but they let in so much wonderful light for the bunnies!). |
Bunny Barn Amenities:
- 24' x 24' space
- Large double story condo Bunny Villa enclosures with solid textured vinyl floors and carpeted ramps.
- Indoor exercise pen and open floor exercise space.
- Five large outdoor fenced exercise pens.
- 11 windows for plenty of sunshine and fresh air.
- Heat and air conditioning via mini split system.
- Reverse osmosis water filtration and water bowls.
- Litter boxes and training for all bunnies - young and old!
- Concrete floor with integrated drains for easy cleaning.
- Covered porch and trees for shady relief on hot summer days.
When the bunnies first moved into the bunny barn, we had created a gravity waste cage system that consisted of wire cages, plastic underneath, and drainage pipes that allowed the waste to be hosed outside into a storage tank. There were several aspects of this system that made it short-lived: the hay was difficult to pass through the pipes, and I learned about the benefits of solid floor enclosures. After investing so much time and money into building this cage system, it was hard to let it go (and at a considerable monetary loss), but I felt that downsizing and solid floor enclosures would make for happier bunnies, so that's what I did.
In 2019, I downsized further to a herd of fewer than 10 Holland lop rabbits and now have all bunnies in double story enclosures as well as space for an exercise pen. The bunnies take turns running loose in the barn and have outdoor playtime when the weather cooperates (which is less than I'd like being in northern Ohio with crazy weather changes)!
