Fun facts about baby bunnies:
Rabbit gestation is about 30-32 days, which is about twice as fast as for dogs!
Baby bunnies are born blind and naked. They look a lot like big baby mice as newborns.
Baby bunnies are called kittens or "kits." When a rabbit delivers her kits, it's called kindling.
Contrary to the myth, you can and MUST touch and check a domestic rabbit's baby bunnies daily to make sure all the kits are being fed. She will not abandon them.
Holland lop babies typically open their eyes around two weeks of age. Sometimes, I use a warm, damp cloth and gently help any eyes that are struggling to open by then.
The mom nurses her babies once or twice a day, usually early in the morning, so it's not often to witness the baby bunnies nursing.
In larger litters or when the mom is struggling to nurse her kits, I gently hold any skinny babies to the mom for extra feedings or foster to another doe if I have one in milk.
Around week 3, the babies are usually hopping in and out of the nest box and nibbling on hay - sometimes pellets and water too. It's hilarious to watch them learn to hop, flop, and binky!
Holland lop bunnies are often the cutest around 4 weeks of age with their fat ears beginning to lop and extremely round bodies.
I never wean my bunny babies before 7 weeks of age, sometimes much later, and they don't go to their new homes before 8 weeks old and well weaned from their mom.
Baby bunnies in particular are very sensitive to a change in diet. I've have much success feeding Sherwood brand baby bunny pellets, hay, and water.
Remember that although incredibly cute, bunnies are often neglected and rehomed as they age when once excited kids tire of the hefty responsibility. Bunnies can live upwards of 10+ years, are delicate creatures with special needs and particular ways of expressing affection, and are a HUGE RESPONSIBILITY!
